First of all, I didn't like that he gave up and met someone by chance. And I didn't like that it's instant love because they look alike. I think a more positive ending would have the realization that you can love and be loved despite your differences. But I expect the author just meant, You'll find someone right for you eventually, and that's probably what kids will take away.
I liked the solar etching technique for the illustrations.

I am going to be totally honest with you on this one. I am very torn with my feelings about it. On one hand I like it and think it is really cute while on the other hand I think it is a little bit depressing. I guess I should explain that a little bit...I think the monster is super cute. I also like the artwork. I don't really know why, but there is something about it that I find pleasing and nice to look at.
What I find depressing about it though is the storyline. The story is about the little love monster and how he has no friends. The love monster then sets out to find some friends, and he just about gives up. Then, when he has pretty much given up all hope of finding a friend, he finds another monster.
I understand the underlying message of this story, but I still think it is a tad bit more sad than it needs to be.

I love the artwork in this book! Big, clear, bright pages filled with color! Pale blues, soft yellows, pinks, and warm reds. Beautiful pages filled with love. Or rather the search for love. Our googly-eyed monster looks high & low, this way and that way for the love of his life. Will he find his love or go home empty hearted?
"You see, sometimes, when you least expect it…love finds you."

(view spoiler)[ I read this story 7 or 8 times. Sometimes it bothered me and other times not so much. I know what the author wants to say here, so I'm letting it go. But I don't like the phrase "funny-looking" in a picture book. The monster lives in a land with all cute, pink fluffy adorableness. He is the only big so called "funny looking" monster. The odd one out. So he goes off to find his love. Someone who looks like him. Why does his love have to look like him? Not looking like everyone else—does not make you funny looking. It makes you unique, special, and beautiful in your own way! I don't know…I'm ranting. Picture books should not make me this ranty. Haha…I just wanted to jot this down to see if it bothers me when I read it again. (hide spoiler)]
An engaging tale of a sympathetic misfit who only wants the same love and companionship he sees others around him enjoying,
Love Monster pairs an endearing story The only non-cuddly resident of Cutesville, Monster longed for friends, companionship, and most of all, for love. Setting out one day on a quest to find what he's been missing, Monster searched high and low, all to no avail. Beaten down and defeated, he was heading back to Cutesville when he met a slightly hairy she-monster on the bus...An engaging tale of a sympathetic misfit who only wants the same love and companionship he sees others around him enjoying,
Love Monster pairs an endearing story with bright, appealing artwork, created through a process called 'solar etching,' in which ultraviolet light is used to make printing plates. As someone who likes block-printing type artwork, I was pretty much guaranteed to find Love Monster appealing, stylistically speaking, but I also appreciated the vivid but subtle color palette that Rachel Bright employed. All in all, an enjoyable little cream-puff of a picture-book, and more than enough to convince me to track down more about Love Monster. ...moreUsed for a monster-themed family storytime on 10/10/17. Characterization
Monster
Monster was a monster who lived in Cutesville. He was hairy and had googly eyes. When the book started, Monster wanted go out and find love. He looked everywhere and did not have any luck. By the end of the book, he realized sometimes love can't be found. It comes on its own.
Setting
This book took place in Cutesville over a day. Cutesville was a place where people liked fluffy things. From the context of the book, I was able to come to the decision that this book was in modern time. The setting was important, because even though it happened in a fake place, what happened can still happen for real.
Theme
The theme in this book was love cannot always be found. Love sometimes comes to the person looking for it. People should never give up if they feel alone, one day it will be different. When Monster was feeling alone, he wanted to give up. He did give up until he was on his was home and meet someone who liked him. Monster realized he would not be able to make others love him.
Recommendation
I would recommend Love Monster to boys and girls ages four to six. This book would be good for them because of the reading level. This would be good for those boys and girls to read with a family member or a friend. Boys and girls will like this book.
There are some reviews that complain about the possible implication of it teaching everyone should be cute, but I don't think that's the case whatsoever. It's a children's book, people. Relax and have fun.

This book could be used in a kindergarten class by reading it aloud to students, and then you could do many different writing activities. One idea would be to use it around Valentine's Day; you can have students write a kind note to a loved one or classmate. The teacher could assign each student someone in the class to write a nice note to. Another idea would be to have first grade students complete a sequencing organizer, and then write about the beginning, middle and end of the story. You could also have them reflect to a time in their life where they may have felt like Love Monster, and have them write about it.
This book is a WOW book for me because of the message it teaches students, and that illustrations and story line will keep students engaged. Love Monster shows you that it is ok to be different, and everyone no matter how they look deserved to have someone love them. It also teaches students that you should not judge someone on their appearance. It can help students understand how others may be feeling when they are excluded because of how they look.

This is a cute book with a message about the differences we all have, and getting what you need when you least expect it. It could easily relate to adults as much as it does to children. Though, as my nine year old pointed out, there is a downside to the overall message and that's while L. Monster did find acceptance with someone like him, he was never shown to be accepted by the town of Cutesville. It's just a little something that I might have overlooked had it not been for my daughter pointing it out.
The illustrations are very nice. The cover shows a shows a sad Love Monster and the back shows the same illustration only from behind. The pages are large, the pictures are clear, colorful and great at getting the meaning of the words across. I enjoy when illustrations go a little deeper and extra little gems are added to aid in the storytelling. It's fun to point the little things out (like the names of the books L. Monster was reading) to the kids while reading.

A lovely story about not worrying about being different, everyone finds love eventually.
"He decided to set out and look for someone who'd love him, just the way he was."
It's hard not to fall in love with the cute and cuddly Love Monster, who is trying so hard to fit in in the town of Cutesville. He wonders if a googly-eyed, hairy monster will ever fit in and goes out to search for someone who will love him just as he is. This is a sweet story about the importance of being yourself no matter how hard things seem.

In this sweet tale, we follow the journey of Monster, who is this unique red creature with his own little quirks. In this world of cute and cuddly, he is special and unlike all the other lovable creatures. Feeling the absent company of a companion, Monster sets out on a journey to find the one meant for him!
My Thoughts
I do have some mixed feelings on this children's book. If you've been around me for a while, it's very rare I find many issues with a children's book, but this left me feeling conflicted. I truly do like this book, but it's a little bit depressing. Let me go into to greater details!
I love a lot of aspects about this book. For starters, our main character, Monster is super cute and just the most precious thing. Even though he's a bit unique, I love his little features and I just want to scoop him up into a hug. He also carries a monster version of a teddy bear and it is too cute! Also, I really liked the blocked lettering. It reminds me of unique poetry collections and for myself, it's very easy on my eyes to read (although block style isn't for everyone). I have no doubt in my mind that children will adore this book and parents will have a fun time reading this to their children.
However among all these adorable features, there's one fact that becomes very troublesome with this book. I understand the underlying message this book is trying to get across, but this book is definitely depressing. The story-line is about a little love Monster who is so different that he's unwanted because he's "funny" looking and basically has distinct physical features that make him so unique. I definitely wish the author would have chosen different words to describe the little monster instead of saying "funny looking" or making it seem being different is a problem. This sweet monster feels so lonely and sad that he doesn't have any friends or someone to love him that he sets out on a journey to find someone who will love him for him. There's a certain point in this book where it's so heartbreaking that it ties a knot in the pit of your stomach. With all of this being said, in general things came off very depressing and saddening, more so than necessary. I wish the author would have included a little more cheerfulness or added a little more at the end to kind of lighten things up a bit more.
"You see, sometimes, when you least expect it…love finds you."
Overall, I did like this children's book. It was super cute and sweet. I definitely wished a little monster plush would have come with this because the little love monster in this book is just the cutest. However, I really wish it didn't come off as depressing. The underlying message is really great, but I would have liked to see more love near the end or something to help lighten the mood up at the end of the book. I felt that one little occurrence wasn't enough to wave away the gloom and doom. This would definitely be a cute bedtime read for parents and their kids or even a cute story to read during Valentine's Day.

I missed this review somewhere along the line... I love this book! It's one that makes me laugh no matter how many times I read it. There are little asides throughout the book that just add humor to everything--very clever. It's also a book that gives a wonderful message of hope, that everyone will find someone perfect for them someday. For: fans of cute romantic books or fans of monsters.
